Devotees offer namaz at Delhi’s Jama Masjid on Eid-ul-Adha
Eid-ul-Adha or Bakra Eid is being celebrated across the country. The day is also celebrated as the 'festival of sacrifice' and falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.
New Delhi: Hundreds of devotees on Sunday morning offered Namaz at Delhi’s iconic Jama Masjid on the occasion Eid-ul-Adha.
Eid-ul-Adha or Bakra Eid is being celebrated across the country. The day is also celebrated as the ‘festival of sacrifice’ and falls on the 10th day of Dhu al-Hijjah, the 12th month of the Islamic or lunar calendar.
The day also marks the end of the annual Haj pilgrimage. Every year, the date changes as it is based on the Islamic lunar calendar, which is about 11 days shorter than the Western 365-day Gregorian calendar.
President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday greeted fellow citizens on the eve of Eid, which he said is a “symbol of sacrifice and service to humanity”.
Extending his greetings to all the fellow citizens, especially Muslim brothers and sisters on the occasion of Eid-uz-Zuha, the President said, “The festival of Eid-uz-Zuha is a symbol of sacrifice and service to the humanity. This festival inspires us to follow the path of self-sacrifice shown by Hazrat Ibrahim.”
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday greeted the people on the occasion of Eid-ul-Adha.
In a tweet, he said, “Eid Mubarak! Greetings on Eid-ul-Adha. May this festival inspire us to work towards furthering the spirit of collective well-being and prosperity for the good of humankind.”
Eid-al-Adha, an occasion of joy and peace, is celebrated as a commemoration of Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice everything for God.
