Fourth madrasa razed in Assam; this time by locals

This was the fourth Assam madrasa to be demolished in the past one month. Earlier three madrasas were bulldozed by the state government.

Guwahati: Locals demolished a madrasa in Pakhiura Char area of Assam’s Goalpara district alleging that the premises were used by two Bangladeshi nationals for terror activities.

According to the officials, the two Bangladeshi nationals, Aminul Islam and Jahangir Alom were taught at the madrasa between 2020-22. They are members of an Al Qaeda affiliated outfit and are currently on the run and a search is on to nab them.

Police said that no government officials were involved in the demolition but the locals voluntarily demolished the madrasa as a mark of strong resentment towards Jihadi activities. A house adjacent to the madrasa was also demolished.

This was the fourth Assam madrasa to be demolished in the past one month. Earlier three madrasas were bulldozed by the state government.

Last month, saying that Assam has become a hotbed of “jihadi activities”, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that religious teachers at mosques and madrasas in Assam will be required to register themselves on a government portal if they come from outside the state.
