UP slapgate: NHRC issues notice to Yogi government


Taking Suo Motu action, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Tuesday issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh Chief Secretary and Director General of Police after a Muslim student was beaten up by his colleagues at a school in Muzaffarnagar at the behest of a teacher. NHRC also asked for a report on the matter of making fun of his religion.

The National Human Rights Commission in its statement said that the commission has sought a detailed report in this matter within four weeks

The commission has said that the report must include the action taken against the teacher, the status of the FIR registered in the case and the compensation to be paid to the victim’s family to ensure prevention of such shameful incidents in future. Actions taken/recommended actions should also be included.

The NHRC issued the notice after taking suo motu notice of a media report in which a teacher of a private school in Muzaffarnagar ordered a classmate to beat up one of her students discriminating him  on the basis of his religion.


The school is located in Khabapur village of Muzaffarnagar district in Uttar Pradesh. According to reports, the student’s family members have said that he was beaten up in a humiliating manner for making mistake in multiplication table during the class.

The video of the incident went viral on August 25, following which action was demanded against the teacher and the school.

According to a media report dated August 28, the teacher, who is also the owner of the school, has not been arrested yet. The school also does not meet the standards of the state education department.

 The family of the affected student has already withdrawn him from the school and is looking for a new school, the report added.
