The incident reportedly occurred at 8:30 a.m. (13:30 GMT) on Sunday and resulted in seven fatalities. Up to six people are receiving treatment for serious and minor injuries, the broadcaster said, citing the Brownsville police department.

Later on Sunday, the Brownsville Fire Department said on social media that the number of injured rose to 12, including one individual airlifted to Valley Baptist Medical Center in the nearby city of Harlingen. Seven people had been pronounced dead at the scene, the fire department added.

According to CNN, the car rammed into a group of people outside a migrant shelter in the border city. Some of those killed are reportedly immigrants.

Police have taken a male suspect into custody, the broadcaster said. The alleged driver is being treated at a hospital under round-the-clock supervision and is being tested for drugs and alcohol, the report said.
