Will hijab ban in sporting competitions become law in France?

Paris: While the hijab row has taken India by storm, France would pass a bill in National Assembly banning the wearing of the hijab in sporting competitions. The move is being taken after the Senate on Wednesday declined to vote on the legislation.

As reported by Reuters, the bill includes a clause which stipulates that the wearing “of conspicuous religious symbols is prohibited” in events and competitions organised by sports federations. The clause was previously added as an amendment by the conservative-dominated upper house.

However, the move is opposed by the government and its allies in the lower house. Veto power remains in the hands of the National Assembly.

Meanwhile, Indian American Muslim Council has shared a post from The Guardian tweeting: “As a 14-year-old Australian, I urge you to stand in solidarity with me against policymakers in France and India, where they are oppressing Muslim women, writes Anhaar Kareem.”
