Man Attempts Self-Immolation Near TN CM’s Residence

Chennai: A middle aged man from Kovilpatti today attempted self-immolation near Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin’s residence in the city, leading to tension for a while.
Police said, the man, Raj, took the security personnel off-guard, when he suddenly doused himself with kerosene and set himself afire. However, the security personnel acted swiftly, poured water and doused the fire.
The man, who suffered about 30 per cent burns, attempted suicide alleging that his nomination to contest in local body election was rejected. He was rushed to Government Kilpauk Medical College and Hospital where Health Minister Ma.Subramanian visited him.
As a precautionary measure, traffic on the Chittaranjan Salai junction, where Mr Stalin’s residence was located, was stopped for a while. All vehicles entering the road were allowed only after thorough checks.
