Ten new cases of Omicron, Karnataka tally 76

The Karnataka government is mulling to impose strict measures to control the spread of the virus.

Bengaluru: Ten new cases of Omicron have been reported in Karnataka, taking the tally to 76 in the state, but all are asymptomatic and have been isolated, Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said oo Monday.

Of the new cases, eight are from Bengaluru and two from Dharwad, the Minister tweeted. Two of them are minors and five have international travel history to the US, Belgium and Dubai.

One of the minor Omicron positives is a primary contact of a 19-year-old man who traveled from the US to Bengaluru on December 14 with a negative RT PCR report and developed mild symptoms 11 days later, the Health Ministry said.

The 19-year-old tested positive for Covid-19 on December 25. His genome sequencing results confirmed him to be positive for Omicron on January 2. His three primary contacts have also tested positive for Covid-19.

The two new cases in Dharwad are contacts of a positive patient who is part of a Covid-19 cluster.

The Karnataka government is mulling to impose strict measures to control the spread of the virus. A decision will be taken after consulting the technical experts, Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said.

The government has clamped night curfew from 10 pm to 5 am from December 28 till January 7.

“We are monitoring both Covid and Omicron. It is spreading at a very fast pace in the country, in the state and in neighboring states. So we need to have a discussion with expertss tomorrow evening,” Bommai said.

The cabinet will discuss the situation on Thursday, he added.

Bommai asked citizens to strictly follow Covid guidelines.

Karnataka has been witnessing a surge in Covid cases over the last five days, with daily figures crossing the 1,000 mark.
