Mumbai: Senior IRS officer Sameer Wankhede, who was the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) Zonal Director, was on Saturday given a clean chit by the caste validity committee (CVC) following allegations that he got a government job under the reserved category on the basis of a fake caste certificate.
A three-member committee probed the case and held that Wankhede was not a Muslim by birth and it has been proven that he belonged to the Mahar caste, which is a Scheduled Caste.
The probe was conducted after former Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik, who is facing charges of money laundring, alleged that Wankhede had forged documents to secure a government job.
Two complaints were also received by Mumbai Police in which the complainant had given the birth and marriage certificates of Wankhede to the committee as evidence.
Wankhede has earlier denied the allegation and said his school record incorrectly mentioned him as a Muslim from 1985 to 1989. Thereafter, it was shown that he was a Mahar.
