Ramallah: Clashes erupted between Israeli security forces and the Palestinians who had gathered at West Bank to mourn the death of Al Jazeera journalist on Friday.

According to CNN, the mourners had flocked to Jerusalem’s streets to attend the burial of veteran Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh but were met with violence by Israeli police as they tried to carry the coffin on foot.

She was killed and another was injured due to bullet wounds suffered during a “search” operation carried out by Israeli forces in the West Bank on Wednesday.

There were conflicting versions about whose bullets hit the journalists as the Palestinian Health Ministry had claimed that the Israeli forces have shot dead Al Jazeera journalist Shireen Abu Akleh in the West Bank.

Hundreds of people had gathered ahead of the funeral outside St. Joseph hospital in East Jerusalem, where Abu Akleh’s body remained until the burial.

After performing the Friday prayers, the mourners chanted “walking, walking on foot” demanding the journalist’s coffin to be carried and transported on foot from the hospital to the Greek Orthodox Church.

However, the Israeli police set up roadblocks near the hospital.

As violence erupted, the police fired a flash bomb and tear gas, CNN reported.
