Schools Closed in Punjab on August 9: Dalit-Christian Bandh Call Following Violent Clash in Manipur

Chandigarh: Private schools in Punjab have taken an unprecedented step by declaring a holiday on August 9, in response to a bandh call echoing from Manipur. This bandh call, initiated by the Dalit-Christian community, comes as a reaction to the violent clash that occurred recently in Manipur.

The collective decision to call for a bandh stemmed from the alarming incidents of violent clashes and the disturbing brutality against women that unfolded in Manipur. Responding to this, both the Dalit and Christian communities joined hands to express their deep concern and demand justice.

In a show of unity, the Christian brotherhood held a press conference at the Press Club of Jalandhar. During this conference, they formally announced the establishment of the Manipur Insaf Morcha, a coalition created to address the grievances and call for a bandh. This bandh is scheduled to occur on August 9.

Surjit Thapar, the president of Manipur Insaf Morcha, conveyed that the movement will observe a closure from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm on August 9. This closure symbolizes a peaceful yet powerful protest against the recent events in Manipur.

Dalit organizations from the Tanda region of Punjab have stood in solidarity against the atrocities witnessed in Manipur. Leaders such as Jagjivan Jaggi, Surinder Zaja, Gagan Bhatti, Om Prakash Bhatti, Surjit Pal, and Jagtar Singh Dara spearheaded the protest, boldly raising their voices against the BJP government’s lack of action.

Standing united, the leaders unequivocally declared their unwavering support for the Dalit community’s call for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ on August 9. This united effort signifies a collective voice against the tragic incident in Manipur, with the assurance of maintaining a peaceful atmosphere during the bandh.

In light of the upcoming bandh, numerous schools across Punjab have chosen to suspend their activities on August 9. This decision stems from concerns for the safety and security of students and staff during the bandh.
