As Hyderabad welcomed the New Year with celebrations and cheer, the city police were busy enforcing a strict crackdown against drunk driving, an operation that led to several shocking and unusual incidents across the city.

During the special drive conducted on New Year’s Eve and the early hours of New Year’s Day, several motorists caught driving under the influence resorted to dramatic and bizarre behaviour after being stopped by the police. Videos of these incidents have since gone viral on social media, drawing widespread reactions from the public.

One such incident was reported from the Falaknuma area in the Old City, where a young man, caught red-handed for drunk driving, lay down in the middle of the road and began crying loudly. In a dramatic scene, he grabbed the feet of police personnel and pleaded for his motorcycle to be returned, saying that his family would severely scold and beat him if he went home without it. He claimed that he had already faced harsh punishment at home during a previous similar incident.

In another case from Kulsoompura, a man engaged in a heated argument with the police, insisting that he had consumed only a small amount of alcohol as it was New Year’s celebrations. He alleged that the breath analyser was malfunctioning and showing incorrect, higher readings.

Meanwhile, in Nampally, a young man crossed all limits after his vehicle was seized. In a shocking display, he began hitting his head against a wall and continued creating a scene for quite some time before being restrained by police personnel.

Hyderabad police have seized the vehicles of all the offenders involved in these incidents and stated that legal action is being taken strictly as per the law.

The viral videos have triggered a flood of comments on social media, with many users criticising the irresponsible behaviour of drunk drivers and praising the police for enforcing road safety measures firmly during the New Year celebrations.
