The deceased have been identified as Bibi Amma, Mohammed Imtiyaz, Syed Habeeb, and two children, Akhil (11) and Praneet (7). The bodies were shifted to the mortuary at Osmania Hospital, where DNA tests will be conducted before handing them over to family members.
How the Nampally Furniture Shop Fire Occurred
- The fire erupted around 1 pm on Saturday at Sai Vishwas Furniture Castle
- The building consists of a ground floor, four upper floors, and two cellars
- The first cellar was packed with furniture, mattress materials, and rexine, which are highly flammable
- Officials suspect a short circuit as the cause of the fire
Local residents noticed thick smoke rising from the basement and immediately alerted the fire department, triggering a large-scale rescue operation.
Seven Trapped, Five Lives Lost
According to officials:
- Seven people, including two children, were trapped inside the building
- Five people could not be rescued and lost their lives
- Akhil and Praneet were the children of the building’s watchman
- Imtiyaz and Habeeb reportedly entered the building to rescue others but were trapped in the blaze
The bodies were found in a charred and unidentifiable condition, making DNA identification necessary.
Rescue Teams Faced Severe Challenges
Rescue teams from Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency, along with police and fire services, worked continuously under extremely dangerous conditions.
Major challenges included:
- Dense smoke trapped in the basement
- Debris and limited visibility
- Concerns over the structural stability of the building
Firefighters used skylifts and robotic equipment, and while the fire was brought under control after nearly eight hours, search operations continued until Sunday.
Illegal Use of Cellar Under Scrutiny
Fire Director General Vikram Singh confirmed that a criminal case will be registered against the building owner and furniture shop management.
He stated that:
- The seller was used in violation of fire and building rules
- Mattress-making materials and rexine were stored illegally
- A family was given accommodation inside the cellar, which is prohibited
He warned that strict criminal action would be taken against the illegal use of parking cellars across Hyderabad.
Building Safety in Doubt, JNTU Team to Inspect
Due to extensive damage, concerns have been raised about the building’s stability. A team of experts from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University has begun inspecting the structure.
Based on the inspection report:
- Authorities will decide whether the building should be demolished
- The area remains cordoned off for public safety
