Small Currency in ATM? Government Plans ATMs Dispensing ₹10, ₹20 and ₹50 Notes

Government plans new ATMs to dispense ₹10, ₹20 and ₹50 notes to solve the change problem. Pilot project underway in Mumbai, nationwide rollout expected.

Hyderabad: Even as UPI usage grows rapidly across India, the everyday problem of getting change continues to trouble commuters, shopkeepers, and daily wage workers. To address this long-standing issue, the Government of India is preparing a plan to increase the availability of small currency notes through ATMs, offering major relief for cash-based daily transactions.

Why Small Currency Notes Are Needed

From paying for tea to auto and bus fares or shopping at local markets, many people still rely on cash and often struggle due to the shortage of change. The new initiative aims to ensure easy access to ₹10, ₹20 and ₹50 notes, reducing inconvenience in routine payments.

Pilot Project Underway

As part of the rollout, the government has already launched a pilot project in Mumbai, where select ATMs are being tested to dispense small denomination notes. Officials are monitoring the response to decide on a nationwide expansion.

What These New ATMs Will Offer

The upcoming ATMs are expected to provide a wider range of currency options, including:

  • ₹10, ₹20 and ₹50 notes
  • ₹100 and ₹500 notes
  • Easy withdrawal for daily cash needs

Where Will These ATMs Be Installed?

To maximize convenience, the government plans to install these ATMs in high-footfall areas, such as:

  • Bus depots and railway stations
  • Hospitals and government offices
  • Local markets and commercial hubs
  • Government hospitals and public service centers

These locations are where people most frequently need small change for quick payments.

Exchange Facility for Large Notes

In addition to dispensing small notes, the government is also considering currency exchange machines that allow people to convert large notes into smaller denominations easily. This will especially benefit small shopkeepers, street vendors, commuters, and daily wage laborers who depend on cash.

Nationwide Rollout Likely

The small-currency ATMs are currently being used on an experimental basis in Mumbai. If the pilot proves successful, the facility is expected to be rolled out across the country, making small cash withdrawals simpler even in the age of digital payments.

The ATM small currency initiative is expected to significantly ease daily cash transactions and reduce dependence on finding change, offering practical relief to millions of people across India.
