He was speaking as the chief guest at a cybercrime awareness seminar organised under the ‘Jagrut Hyderabad – Surakshit Hyderabad’ programme at PSR Shloka Convention, within the limits of Hyderabad, on Saturday.
Fake Trading Scams Causing Huge Losses
The Police Commissioner warned that cyber criminals are cheating people by offering fake stock market trading schemes, often showing forged SEBI certificates to gain trust.
Key points highlighted:
- Educated people are being targeted the most
- Fake trading proposals promise high returns
- Losses run into up to Rs 1 crore per victim in some cases
He urged people not to trust strangers who approach them with investment tips, especially those linking profits to gold and silver price fluctuations.
Warning on Social Media and APK Files
The Commissioner advised citizens to be extremely cautious online, particularly on social media platforms.
He cautioned people to:
- Avoid sharing personal photos and sensitive information
- Never download APK files sent by unknown persons
- Never share OTPs with anyone, under any circumstances
He said many frauds begin with a single careless click.
‘Digital Arrest’ Video Call Scams on the Rise
The Police Commissioner also warned about a new trend where fraudsters impersonate police officers and make video calls threatening people with so-called “digital arrest”.
Such callers:
- Create fear and panic
- Demand money to “close cases”
- Use fake police uniforms and backgrounds
Citizens were advised to immediately disconnect such calls and report them.
Beware of Fake Loan Apps
People were also warned against unknown loan apps offering loans at very low interest rates. These apps often steal personal data and later use it for blackmail and extortion.
Call 1930 During the ‘Golden Hour’
The Police Commissioner stressed that victims should act fast if they fall prey to cyber fraud.
Important advice:
- Call 1930 cybercrime helpline immediately
- Report during the “Golden Hour”
- Quick reporting helps police freeze fraudsters’ bank accounts
- This increases chances of recovering the lost money
Awareness Is the Key to a Safe Hyderabad
The seminar under the Jagrut Hyderabad – Surakshit Hyderabad initiative focused on empowering citizens with knowledge to protect themselves online.
The message was clear: being alert, informed, and cautious online can prevent most cyber crimes.
