Big Relief for UPI Users: New Rules Introduced to Make Transactions Faster and Safer

In a major relief to users, complaints related to failed transactions where money is debited but payment does not go through will now be resolved within a few hours. Earlier, such issues could take anywhere from three days to a week. The responsibility for timely resolution will lie with the respective UPI apps or banks.

The Central Government has introduced several new rules this month to further strengthen the Unified Payments Interface (UPI) system and promote digital payments across the country. These changes aim to enhance user convenience, improve transparency, and make transactions faster and more secure.

According to the new guidelines, every UPI transaction must now be completed within 10 seconds, compared to the earlier limit of 30 seconds. This move is expected to significantly benefit users during peak hours by reducing waiting time and ensuring smoother payment experiences.

The government has also decided to tighten user verification norms, especially for high-value transactions. Clear user consent will now be mandatory before making payments, helping to prevent accidental or unauthorized transfers. Users will also get greater control over auto-debit and recurring payment mandates.

Officials stated that long-unused or inactive UPI IDs will be temporarily deactivated. To reactivate such IDs, users will need to complete a re-verification process, which will help prevent misuse of dormant accounts.

Additionally, the process of sending payment requests to other users will be made stricter to curb unnecessary or spam requests.

With these new measures, the government expects the UPI ecosystem to become more robust, secure, and user-friendly, further accelerating the adoption of digital payments in India.
