Congress Extends Support to February 12 Bharat Bandh, Opposes Centre’s Labour Reforms

Indian National Congress extends full support to February 12 Bharat Bandh, opposing Centre’s labour reforms and backing trade unions and farmers.

The Indian National Congress has officially announced its support for the February 12 Bharat Bandh, a nationwide strike called by a joint platform of 10 Central Trade Unions and backed by several farmers’ organisations.

The party described the Bharat Bandh as a democratic protest against the BJP-led Central Government’s labour reforms and economic policies, stating that it stands in solidarity with workers and farmers across the country.

Congress Calls for Nationwide Support

In a communication sent to Pradesh Congress Committees (PCCs), K. C. Venugopal, General Secretary of the Congress party, urged state units to extend full support to the February 12 Bharat Bandh.

He called upon party leaders and workers across India to participate in the protest and show solidarity with trade unions and farmer groups.

Why the February 12 Bharat Bandh Is Being Held

According to Congress leaders, the strike has been called to oppose the Centre’s labour and economic policies.

Key Concerns Raised:

  • New labour codes allegedly weaken job security
  • Reduction in statutory safeguards for workers
  • Increased flexibility for employers in hiring and firing
  • Economic policies impacting farmers’ livelihoods

The party stated that these reforms have created uncertainty among workers and farmers.

Congress Slams Labour Reforms

The Congress alleged that the new labour reforms introduced by the Central Government have diluted worker protections and made employment conditions less secure.

Party leaders said the February 12 Bharat Bandh reflects growing public dissatisfaction with economic policies that they claim are affecting common citizens.

Call for Justice and Fair Economic Policies

The Congress leadership emphasised the need for:

  • Justice for workers
  • Dignity in employment
  • Fair and inclusive economic policies
  • Protection of farmers’ interests

The party reiterated that it will stand with trade unions and farmer organisations during the February 12 Bharat Bandh.

With the nationwide strike scheduled for February 12, political attention is now focused on how the Bharat Bandh unfolds across various states.
