Congress to Take Over Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, Says Telangana Minister

Although the BJP has emerged as the single largest party by winning 30 out of 66 divisions — just four short of the majority mark of 34 — Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has asserted that the Congress will ultimately secure the mayor’s chair.

Hyderabad: The political battle for the post of Mayor of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation in Telangana has intensified, with both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress staking claim to the top post.

Although the BJP has emerged as the single largest party by winning 30 out of 66 divisions — just four short of the majority mark of 34 — Telangana Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has asserted that the Congress will ultimately secure the mayor’s chair.

Confident of his party’s prospects, the minister stated, “We are a political party and we will do politics. There is nothing to hide about it.” His remarks have triggered unease within the BJP camp, particularly among supporters of Union Minister Bandi Sanjay, as Congress steps up efforts to gather support.

The Congress, which secured 14 seats in the corporation, is reportedly working to win over independent councillors and smaller parties in a bid to cross the majority threshold.

The election for the Mayor is scheduled to be held on February 16, when it will become clear which party will take control of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation.

The contest is being closely watched as a key political test for both parties in Telangana’s urban local body politics.
