Over 39,000 Consumers Shift from LPG to PNG; 4.85 Lakh New Connections Added Across India

Over 39,000 Consumers Shift from LPG to PNG

New Delhi: In a major push towards cleaner and more efficient fuel usage, over 39,000 consumers across India have surrendered their LPG connections and switched to Piped Natural Gas (PNG), the government announced on Sunday.

The transition has been facilitated through the MYPNGD.in platform, reflecting a broader strategy aimed at ensuring long-term energy security and reducing dependence on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

According to official data, the government has intensified efforts to promote PNG adoption while simultaneously tightening oversight of LPG distribution. Measures are being implemented under the Essential Commodities Act, 1955 and the LPG Control Order, 2000 to prevent hoarding and black marketing.

Strict Monitoring and Enforcement Drive

States and Union Territories have been directed to ensure smooth availability of petroleum products, including LPG, petrol, and diesel. The Centre has held multiple review meetings, including high-level discussions chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas earlier this month.

Authorities have also been instructed to:

  • Issue daily press briefings
  • Counter misinformation on social media
  • Strengthen enforcement through district administrations

As part of a nationwide crackdown, over 2,400 raids were conducted on April 18 alone to check illegal practices such as hoarding and black marketing of LPG.

Public sector oil marketing companies have also taken strict action, imposing penalties on 264 LPG distributors and suspending 67 agencies for violations.

PNG Expansion Gains Momentum

The government is rapidly expanding city gas distribution networks to accelerate PNG adoption. Since March 2026:

  • 4.85 lakh PNG connections have been activated
  • 5.43 lakh new consumers have registered

Major city gas companies like Indraprastha Gas Limited, Mahanagar Gas Limited, GAIL Gas, and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited are offering incentives to both domestic and commercial consumers to encourage the transition.

Additionally, the Centre has linked additional commercial LPG allocation to states’ progress in PNG expansion, with 22 States and Union Territories already benefiting from this reform-oriented policy.

Fast-Track Infrastructure and Gas Supply Assurance

To support rapid expansion, the government has introduced a three-month accelerated approval framework for city gas infrastructure projects under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

On the supply side:

  • 100% natural gas supply is being maintained for domestic PNG and CNG transport
  • Fertiliser plants are receiving around 95% of their required gas supply
  • Industrial and commercial sectors are getting up to 80% supply

This coordinated approach highlights the government’s commitment to ensuring energy stability while promoting cleaner fuel alternatives.
