Hyderabad: In a major road safety initiative, Hyderabad Police Commissioner VC Sajjanar chaired a key coordination meeting on May 05, 2026, at TGICCC to improve passenger safety on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) and prevent accidents.

With an average of 2.80 lakh vehicles using the ORR daily and 5 to 6 accidents occurring every day, officials discussed coordinated measures to bring accidents down to zero. The initiative is ongoing with multiple departments involved.
High-Level Meeting at TGICCC on ORR Safety
The meeting was held under the leadership of VC Sajjanar, IPS, focusing on strengthening safety measures on Hyderabad’s ORR.
Participants included:
- Transport Commissioner Ilambarthi, IAS
- HMDA Urban Forestry Director V.S.N.V. Prasad, IFS
- Representatives from NHAI, GHMC, HGCL, IRB Infra
- Traffic DCPs and Additional DCPs from Cyberabad, Malkajgiri, and Future City Commissionerates
IRB representatives presented a PowerPoint presentation explaining ongoing road safety measures.
Focus on Preventing Accidents on ORR
Speaking at the meeting, VC Sajjanar said:
- Preventive measures can save lives rather than reacting after accidents
- ORR handles around 2.80 lakh vehicles daily
- Currently, 5 to 6 accidents occur daily
- Departments must work in coordination to reduce accidents to zero
Measures Proposed to Improve ORR Safety
Officials discussed several important steps:
- Issue challans and provide special counselling to rule violators
- Send safety messages to mobile phones of drivers entering ORR
- Reduce emergency response time
- Deploy traffic marshals if required
Drivers were instructed:
- Not to stop vehicles on ORR except in case of breakdown
- In emergencies, inform the helpline immediately
- Park only in the extreme left lane with proper safety precautions
Causes of Accidents on ORR (Last 4 Months Data)
Data analysis revealed:
- 33% accidents due to drowsiness
- 25% due to negligent driving
- 15% due to overspeeding
- 14% due to tyre bursts
Officials stressed that awareness among drivers can help prevent these accidents.
Transport Department’s Role and Monthly Reviews
Transport Commissioner Ilambarthi, IAS, stated:
- The department is taking all necessary measures to prevent accidents
- Special focus is being given to vehicle fitness and tyre quality checks
- Suggested monthly review meetings for ORR road safety
