After three decades, Karnataka police arrest man in Babri demolition riots case

In a routine drive to crack long-pending cases, Hubballi police on Monday arrested a person involved in riots after the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992.

Hubballi: In a routine drive to crack long-pending cases, Hubballi police on Monday arrested a person involved in riots after the demolition of Babri Masjid in 1992.

“This is nothing new. It is a routine drive to crack long-pending cases. This particular case was tagged as long pending. We have cracked 37 long-pending cases in the last three months. This is one of the cases. The accused was involved in riots in this city after the Babri demolition in Ayodhya,” Hubballi-Dharwad Police Commissioner Renuka Sukumar told reporters here.

Srikant Poojary, the accused, has been sent to judicial custody, Sukumar said. He had allegedly torched a store owned by a person belonging to the minority community in Hubballi on 5 December 1992.

This step has become a talking point among political circles and is expected to snowball into a major controversy in the state. The arrest also comes in the wake of Hindu outfits and the BJP taking up door-to-door campaigning ahead of Pran Prathistha of Ram Lalla at Ayodhya.
