Air India Express Issues Show Cause Notice to Pilot Over Assault Allegations at Delhi Airport

Air India Express has issued a show cause notice to one of its pilots following serious assault allegations at Delhi airport, triggering an internal inquiry. The incident, which allegedly took place at Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), has drawn public attention after images and details surfaced on social media.

Allegations Against the Pilot

The pilot, identified as Virender Sejwal, was reportedly off duty and travelling as a passenger on a SpiceJet flight.

The complainant, Ankit Dewan, alleged that:

• The pilot objected to his presence at the staff security lane
• A verbal exchange escalated into a physical altercation
• He was allegedly assaulted and left bleeding
• The incident took place in public view at the security area

Photographs showing injuries to the passenger’s nose and face were later shared online, amplifying public scrutiny.

Air India Express Responds With Disciplinary Action

Following the allegations, Air India Express confirmed that:

• A show cause notice has been issued to the pilot
• The pilot has been taken off duty temporarily
• An external inquiry committee will be constituted

Sources said labour law provisions are being followed, as the pilot falls under the “workmen” category for disciplinary proceedings.

Pilot’s Version: Personal Dispute, Not Duty-Related

Earlier, Air India Express clarified that the pilot was not on duty at the time of the incident and was travelling as a regular passenger. The airline stated that:

• The incident was a personal matter between two passengers
• It had no link to the pilot’s professional role
• The issue was being portrayed unfairly as a professional misconduct case

The airline maintained that due process would be followed before any final decision.
