The incident took place late Wednesday night near Keurbhanga Bazar in Kaneshwar Union of Damudya upazila. Khokon Chandra Das, who runs a medicine shop and mobile banking business, was returning home after closing his shop with the day’s earnings.
Sequence of Events
- Miscreants stopped his CNG auto-rickshaw
- He was hacked with sharp weapons
- Petrol was poured on him and he was set on fire
- To save himself, he jumped into a nearby pond
Local residents rescued him and rushed him to Shariatpur Sadar Hospital, from where he was shifted to Dhaka due to the seriousness of his injuries.
Police Identify Suspects, Probe Underway
Police confirmed the incident and said that two local suspects have been identified.
Authorities stated that:
- The names of Rabbi and Sohag, both local residents, have surfaced
- Efforts are underway to arrest the accused
- Police are working to identify other persons involved
Officials described the attack as a targeted and violent assault on a local businessman.
Victim Suffers Severe Injuries
Doctors treating Khokon Chandra Das said he had:
- Multiple deep injury marks
- Serious abdominal injuries
- Burn injuries on his face, head, and hands
Due to the critical nature of his wounds, he was shifted to Dhaka for specialised care.
Family Says No Enmity, Shocked by Attack
The victim’s wife said the family had no known disputes or enemies in the area. She stated that her husband was attacked after being recognised by the assailants, which may have prompted the brutal attempt to kill him.
The family has demanded strict punishment for those responsible.

This is the second such brutal attack on a Hindu man in less than two days. In recent weeks, multiple incidents involving mob violence, lynching, and targeted killings of Hindu individuals have been reported from different parts of Bangladesh.
