Hyderabad: Marking World Cancer Day, Arete Hospitals on Tuesday announced the launch of Cyclothon – Edition 1, a community-focused initiative aimed at promoting cancer awareness, early detection, prevention, and healthy living. The hospital also announced that the Cyclothon will be made an annual event.

All proceeds from the Cyclothon will be utilised for cancer care charity initiatives, including awareness programmes, screening camps, and patient support services.

The announcement was made at a press conference in Hyderabad, where the event poster was unveiled, official merchandise was introduced, and registrations were formally opened. The Cyclothon is scheduled to be held on February 22, with reporting at 5:00 am.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Vijay Karan Reddy, HOD & Senior Consultant – Radiation Oncology and Director of Oncology, Arete Hospitals, said World Cancer Day provides an important platform for oncologists to spread awareness about the disease. Embracing this year’s theme, “United by Unique,” he said every cancer patient’s journey is different, yet society remains united in the fight against cancer.

“This Cyclothon places people—not just the disease—at the centre of cancer care. Our focus is on screening, early detection, timely treatment, and making cancer care personalised, compassionate, accessible, and equitable,” he said, adding that the hospital stands in solidarity with cancer survivors and their families.

Dr. Vijender Reddy T, Chairman, Arete Hospitals, said the initiative reflects the hospital’s commitment to community-centric healthcare. “Healthcare goes beyond treatment. It involves education, engagement, and empowerment. Through the Cyclothon, we hope to encourage a culture of awareness and prevention,” he noted.

Indian actress Aishwarya Rajesh, the chief guest at the launch, urged citizens to participate actively. “Such initiatives not only promote fitness but also create meaningful conversations around health. Public participation is key to spreading awareness about cancer prevention and early detection,” she said.

Mr. P. Venkatraman, Race Director for the Cyclothon and Founder of YouTooCanRun, highlighted the role of physical activity in disease prevention. “Movement is medicine. Linking physical fitness with cancer awareness is a commendable step, and this initiative encourages people of all ages to take charge of their health,” he said.

The Cyclothon is open to participants from all age groups. Cycling partners for the event include Hyderabad Cycling Revolution, Happy Hyderabad, and Hyderabad Cyclists Group, while You Too Can Run is the organising partner.

Registrations are open, and participants will receive official event merchandise. With this initiative, Arete Hospitals aims to build a sustained, city-wide movement around cancer awareness, preventive care, and early intervention.
