Badruddin Ajmal Condemns Detention of 28 Muslims in Assam, Says We Will Go to High Court
He asserts that these individuals are all Indian citizens and describes the move as an attempt to harass and instill fear within the Muslim community.
New Delhi: Maulana Badruddin Ajmal, National President of the All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), former Member of Parliament, and President of Jamiat Ulema Assam, has strongly condemned the recent detention of 28 Muslims from Barpeta district in Assam.
He asserts that these individuals are all Indian citizens and describes the move as an attempt to harass and instill fear within the Muslim community.
In a statement issued today, Ajmal questioned how, if the parents, children, and relatives of the detained individuals are considered Indian by the police, these individuals themselves could be deemed foreigners. He emphasized that the AIUDF is gathering relevant documents and will fight their case in the High Court and, if necessary, in the Supreme Court to ensure justice.

Ajmal criticized the practice of sending notices based on suspicion alone, leading to harassment and arrest due to minor document discrepancies. He highlighted that once cases reach higher courts, justice is often served, exposing the flaws in local police operations. However, he pointed out the lack of accountability for the mental, physical, and financial damages inflicted on these individuals during the legal process.

He also noted the challenges faced by people whose documents are lost or damaged due to natural disasters like floods, which frequently affect Assam. Ajmal argued that discrepancies in document spelling and other issues are used to unjustly target individuals.
The AIUDF leader accused the BJP of continuing the discriminatory practices started by Congress, which initiated the “D-Voter” scheme and established detention camps during its tenure. He denounced the current government’s actions as a continuation of this oppressive approach, aimed at further intimidating and persecuting Muslims.
Ajmal affirmed that the struggle against such injustices, which began with the Congress regime, will persist, and the AIUDF will continue to fight for the rights and dignity of the affected individuals.
