Bajrang Dal Workers Gather Outside Mohammed Deepak’s House and Gym, Raise Communal Slogans
The Kotdwar incident where a Hindu youth said “My name is Mohammad Deepak” while defending a Muslim shopkeeper highlights rising communal tension, threats, and questions over police action.

The incident took place on January 26 in Kotdwar, Uttarakhand. Deepak was present at a friend’s shop when a group of individuals allegedly linked to Bajrang Dal began harassing a 70-year-old Muslim shopkeeper, Vakil Ahmed.

The group reportedly demanded that the shopkeeper remove the word “Baba” from the shop name “Baba School Dress”, claiming that the term could only be used by people of a particular religion.
“My Name Is Mohammad Deepak”
Deepak objected to the harassment. When asked about his identity, he responded, “My name is Mohammad Deepak.” Later, he clarified that the statement was meant to send a clear message — that all citizens in India are equal, and humanity comes before religion.
A video of the exchange soon went viral on social media, turning the phrase into a nationwide talking point.
Online Abuse and Threats After Video Went Viral
After the video spread, Deepak alleged that he was subjected to online abuse, hate messages, and death threats. He claimed that several social media users openly called on others to reach Kotdwar and “teach him a lesson.”
Fearing violence, Deepak said he informed the local police and administration in advance.
Allegations of Police Inaction
According to Deepak, despite informing authorities, a large crowd along with bajrang dal members gathered outside his house and gym the next day, remaining there for nearly six to seven hours. During this time, communal slogans were allegedly raised, abuses were hurled, and his family members were targeted.
Deepak claimed that no effective police action was taken during the gathering to disperse those involved in spreading communal tension.
Detained While Protesters Remained Free?
One of the most serious allegations made by Deepak is that police detained him for over two hours, instead of taking action against the people who had gathered from outside and were allegedly inciting hatred.
He termed this treatment unfair, stating that those spreading communal tension were allowed to move freely while he was kept in custody.
Continued Intimidation and Safety Concerns
Deepak further alleged that members of the same group later recorded videos outside his gym, mocked him, and issued open threats. In one such video, he was reportedly described as being “on the target,” raising fresh concerns about his personal safety.
“The Country Needs Love, Not Hate”
Despite the threats and pressure, Deepak Kumar has refused to back down. He stated that India needs love, unity, and brotherhood, not hatred. According to him, spreading love is the strongest response to communal hate.
His stand has received strong support on social media, with many users questioning the role of the administration and demanding protection and justice for those who speak up for communal harmony.
A Sentence That Became a Symbol
“My name is Mohammad Deepak” is no longer just a sentence. It has become a symbol of the challenges faced by people who raise their voice against communal hatred. The Kotdwar incident once again raises a critical question — will those who stand for harmony and humanity receive timely protection and justice, or be left to face threats alone?
