Inter-State Ganja Smuggler Arrested at Begumpet Railway Station, 16.4 Kg Ganja Seized

Hyderabad GRP, TGANB Eagle Team and RPF arrested an inter-state ganja smuggler at Begumpet Railway Station and seized 16.452 kg of ganja worth ₹8.22 lakh.

In a major crackdown on drug trafficking, Hyderabad GRP staff, along with the Eagle Team of TGANB and Railway Protection Force (RPF), apprehended an inter-state ganja peddler at Begumpet Railway Station and seized 16.452 kilograms of ganja worth ₹8,22,600.

The accused was caught while allegedly transporting the contraband from Bhubaneswar to Mumbai.

Accused Held with Two Trolley Suitcases

The arrest was made on January 21, 2026, at around 5:20 pm, during a routine checking drive at Begumpet Railway Station. The police team noticed a woman moving suspiciously with two trolley suitcases.

Upon verification, she was identified as Mamatha Digal (37), a housemaid by profession, currently residing in Navi Mumbai and originally from Odisha.

Ganja Hidden in Suitcases, Nine Packets Recovered

During the search, police found nine packets of ganja, wrapped in brown tape and concealed inside the trolley bags. A seizure panchanama was conducted on the spot.

Seized items include:

  • 16.452 kg ganja (9 packets)
  • Estimated value: ₹8,22,600
  • One mobile phone

Smuggling Plan Revealed During Interrogation

During questioning, the accused revealed that she was offered ₹10,000 per suitcase by a man named Ashok, a resident of Mumbai, to transport ganja.

She stated that:

  • Ashok arranged her train tickets from Mumbai to Bhubaneswar
  • She stayed in Bhubaneswar till January 19
  • An unidentified person handed over the suitcases at Bhubaneswar Railway Station
  • She boarded the Konark Express to Mumbai before being intercepted at Begumpet

One Accused Absconding, Case Registered Under NDPS Act

Police registered a case Cr. No. 11/2026 under relevant sections of the NDPS Act.

Accused details:

  • A-2: Mamatha Digal (arrested)
  • A-1: Ashok (Mumbai) – absconding

Efforts are underway to trace and arrest the main accused involved in the drug network.

Senior Officers Supervise Operation, Team Appreciated

The operation was led by senior officers of Hyderabad GRP under the supervision of officials from Secunderabad Urban and the Eagle Team. The Inspector General of Police, Railways and Road Safety, appreciated the efforts of the police personnel and announced suitable rewards for the successful operation.

Continued Crackdown on Drug Trafficking

Police officials stated that checks at railway stations and transit routes will continue to curb inter-state drug smuggling and ensure public safety in Hyderabad and across Telangana.
