Bipolar Schizophrenic Youth Sends Threat Mail to Mumbai’s US Consulate
Mumbai police found out a Kolkata guy, who's well-educated but has Bipolar Schizophrenia, sent the threat.
The email, bearing the subject line “Threat against USA consulates,” arrived at the Consulate General’s office at an early hour, 3:50 am on February 9. Its contents were alarming, indicating the sender’s purported status as a fugitive US citizen facing numerous felony charges in the United States. The sender demanded a public apology from President Joe Biden, threatening dire consequences if the demand went unmet, including the destruction of US Consulates and harm to American citizens.
In response, the Mumbai police swiftly initiated proceedings, registering a case against an unidentified perpetrator at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) police station. The investigation led authorities to trace the email’s origin to Kolkata, unraveling a surprising discovery about the sender’s identity.
The perpetrator turned out to be a highly educated 22-year-old individual hailing from Kolkata, boasting a postgraduate degree in Biochemistry from Los Angeles, USA. However, what initially seemed like a deliberate act of malice took a poignant turn as authorities uncovered the youth’s struggles with Bipolar Schizophrenia.
According to sources within law enforcement, the youth’s parents disclosed their son’s mental health condition, shedding light on his erratic behavior. The father, an alumnus of the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), and the mother, a legal professional, provided insights into their son’s challenging journey. They revealed that despite his academic achievements, their son’s mental health deteriorated over time, leading to episodes of anger and aggression.
The youth’s fascination with news surrounding President Biden seemingly influenced his actions, prompting him to send the threatening email during a particularly distressed state of mind. His parents shared that they had initially sought treatment for him in the United States but later opted for Ayurvedic remedies upon observing no significant improvement.
Law enforcement officials, after thorough scrutiny of medical records and consultations with the family, made the decision not to pursue legal action against the youth. Instead, they issued a formal notice to the father, documenting his statement for official records.
In light of the circumstances surrounding the case and the youth’s mental health condition, the police resolved not to escalate the matter further. While an FIR (First Information Report) had been filed with the BKC police station, authorities planned to conclude the case by submitting a summary report to the court, effectively closing the investigation.
The incident underscores the importance of understanding and addressing mental health challenges within society. It serves as a poignant reminder of the need for empathy and support for individuals grappling with such conditions, emphasizing the significance of holistic approaches to mental well-being.
