Hyderabad: In a significant food safety enforcement action during the ongoing mango season, authorities seized nearly 200 kilograms of mangoes that were allegedly artificially ripened using excessive quantities of ethylene chemical “Diamond Ripe.” The operation was carried out in the Goshamahal area of Hyderabad.
According to police officials, the trader involved was found using six sachets of the ripening agent per 20 kg tray, exceeding the permissible limit set by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India, which allows a maximum of five sachets for the same quantity.
Violation of Food Safety Norms
Authorities stated that the overuse of ethylene-based ripening agents can pose serious health risks. While ethylene is permitted in controlled quantities for fruit ripening, excessive use or improper handling violates food safety regulations.
