New Delhi: The Congress party has announced its initial lineup of candidates for the forthcoming Rajya Sabha Biennial Elections.

According to an official statement from the All India Congress Committee (AICC), Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has endorsed Sonia Gandhi from Rajasthan and Dr. Akhilesh Prasad Singh from Bihar.

Sonia Gandhi, the incumbent Chairperson of the Congress Parliamentary Party, filed her nomination on Wednesday, transitioning from the Lok Sabha to the Upper House. She has been a consistent representative of Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh.

Joining her are Abhishek Manu Singhvi, a senior advocate and current Rajya Sabha member representing West Bengal, contesting from Himachal Pradesh, and Chandrakant Handore, the former Maharashtra cabinet minister and Mayor of Mumbai.

This precedes the Lok Sabha elections expected for April-May this year, with the retirement of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh from his Rajya Sabha seat in Rajasthan in April.

The Election Commission has scheduled the Rajya Sabha elections for 15 states, including Uttar Pradesh, on February 27, with voting from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and results declared on the same day.
