Crackdown on Ration Rice Smuggling Intensified in Telangana

Officials said the government has decided to closely monitor middlemen involved in the smuggling of rice distributed under the Public Distribution System (PDS), as well as ration dealers suspected of facilitating such activities.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Civil Supplies Department has intensified its crackdown on the illegal transportation and black marketing of government-supplied ration rice across the state.

Officials said the government has decided to closely monitor middlemen involved in the smuggling of rice distributed under the Public Distribution System (PDS), as well as ration dealers suspected of facilitating such activities.

As part of the tightened vigilance measures, authorities have drawn up a special plan to conduct inspections of ration shops and storage godowns twice every month. Vigilance officials have made it clear that any dealer found involved in irregularities during inspections will face immediate cancellation of their dealership.

According to official data, nearly 1,500 quintals of ration rice have been seized during raids conducted over the past year.

Investigations have revealed that several individuals holding ration cards illegally procure their allotted quota and sell it to dealers at ₹15 per kilogram. The rice is then allegedly smuggled to other states for higher profits.

Officials further indicated that an estimated 8 to 9 lakh cardholders currently listed may be ineligible for ration benefits, raising serious concerns about leakages in the welfare distribution system.

The department has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding food security schemes and ensuring that subsidised rice reaches genuine beneficiaries without diversion or misuse.
