Debt-Burdened Farmer Dies by Suicide in Telangana’s Adilabad

According to police and family members, the deceased has been identified as Gudam Ram Reddy. He owned three acres of agricultural land and had additionally leased around 20 acres from local landowners, where he had been cultivating cotton and other commercial crops for the past three years.

Hyderabad: A 55-year-old farmer allegedly died by suicide in Pathan village of Adilabad district, Telangana, on Sunday, reportedly due to mounting debt and repeated agricultural losses.

According to police and family members, the deceased has been identified as Gudam Ram Reddy. He owned three acres of agricultural land and had additionally leased around 20 acres from local landowners, where he had been cultivating cotton and other commercial crops for the past three years.

To support his farming activities, Reddy had reportedly taken loans amounting to approximately Rs 10 lakh. However, unfavorable weather conditions and poor crop yields resulted in significant financial losses, leaving him unable to repay the debt.

Family members stated that he had been under severe mental stress due to the growing financial burden. On Sunday, he allegedly consumed pesticide in his cattle shed, leading to his death.

He is survived by his wife and two sons. Based on a complaint filed by his wife, Venkatamma, police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident.

The tragic incident once again highlights the ongoing distress faced by farmers in parts of Telangana due to crop failures, climate challenges, and debt-related pressures.
