Disappointed with poll results but have not lost courage: Congress

New Delhi: Congress on Thursday said it was disappointed with the results of polls in five states, but added that it has lost polls but not its courage and the party will continue its fight for raising issues of the people.

“The results of polls in five states have been against the expectations of Congress. We were expecting better results in Goa, Uttarakhand and Punjab. We accept we failed in getting the blessings of people,” Surjewala said.
Talking about Punjab, he said, “We tried to give a polite, clean and ground based leader in form of Charanjit Singh Channi, but we could not fight four and half years of anti-incumbency that developed in the rule of Captain Amarinder Singh. We accept the verdict and congratulate AAP, Bhagwant Mann and Arvind Kejriwal”.
He said Congress succeeded in reviving itself in Uttar Pradesh.
“Even though it did not convert into seats, Congress reached every street and locality,” he said.
Surjewala also said Congress contested the elections well in Uttarakhand and Goa, but could not reach victory.
“This is a lesson that we need to work harder on the ground,” he said.
Congress’ performed poorly in all five states that had gone to polls – Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Punjab, Goa and Manipur. BJP is headed towards return to power in Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Goa, and is also leading in Manipur. In Punjab, Congress faced defeat from Aam Aadmi Party which swept the polls.
