Telangana HC Cancels Ticket Price Hike for Prabhas’ ‘Raja Saab’, Slams Government Memo

Telangana High Court quashes government memo allowing ticket price hike for Prabhas’ film Raja Saab, criticises repeated burden on moviegoers.

In a major relief to moviegoers, the Telangana High Court on Friday quashed the government memo allowing a hike in cinema ticket prices for the Prabhas-starrer “Raja Saab”, strongly criticising the repeated practice of increasing ticket rates for big-budget films.

The court made it clear that cinema ticket price hikes cannot be permitted casually and must strictly follow existing rules, keeping the burden on the common public in mind.

HC Questions Government Over Repeated Ticket Hikes

Hearing a petition filed by advocate Vijay Gopal, the High Court observed that permissions for higher ticket prices are being granted every time a major film is released, allegedly in violation of established norms.

The petitioner argued that:

  • The Home Department Secretary has no authority to issue memos permitting ticket price hikes
  • Such powers rest only with district collectors and the Hyderabad Police Commissioner
  • Government memos are being used to bypass the rules during high-profile film releases

The court agreed with these arguments and struck down the memo related to “Raja Saab.”

‘Why Are Rules Ignored Every Time?’: Court’s Sharp Remarks

Expressing strong displeasure, the High Court questioned the Government Pleader on why such memos were being “cleverly issued” despite repeated warnings.

The judge remarked that even the concerned minister had recently stated that ticket prices would not be increased, yet permissions continue to be granted. Recalling earlier days, the court noted that Hyderabad once had uniform ticket pricing, but frequent hikes now unfairly burden the public.

“We also go to movies. We know how ticket prices are being increased,” the court observed.

Big Relief for Moviegoers

With this order, the High Court has once again reaffirmed that cinema ticket pricing must remain regulated and that government departments cannot act beyond their authority, especially in matters affecting the general public.

The ruling is expected to have a wider impact on future film releases, especially big-budget projects seeking special permissions for ticket price hikes in Telangana.
