Hyderabad Becomes Mega City After GHMC Merger, Says Commissioner R.V. Karnan

Hyderabad becomes a mega city after 27 municipalities merge into GHMC, expanding its area to 2,053 sq km. Commissioner R.V. Karnan outlines new zones and offices.

Hyderabad: Hyderabad has officially emerged as a mega city following the merger of 27 municipalities into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC), significantly expanding the city’s area and administrative structure, GHMC Commissioner R. V. Karnan said on Friday.

The Commissioner made these remarks while inaugurating the newly established Rajendranagar and Golkonda Zonal Commissioner offices, marking a major step in strengthening civic governance across the expanded city.

GHMC Area Expands to Over 2,000 Sq Km

Commissioner Karnan said the municipal merger has transformed Hyderabad into one of India’s largest urban bodies.

Key highlights of the expansion:

  • GHMC area increased from 650 sq km to 2,053 sq km
  • 27 municipalities merged into GHMC
  • Hyderabad now covers a much wider urban and semi-urban region

The expansion reflects the rapid growth of Hyderabad as a major economic and residential hub.

Administrative Structure Strengthened for Public Convenience

To manage the enlarged jurisdiction efficiently, the Telangana government has significantly upgraded GHMC’s administrative framework:

  • Wards increased from 150 to 300
  • Zones doubled from 6 to 12
  • Circles expanded from 30 to 60

According to the Commissioner, these changes were aimed at ensuring administrative convenience, faster decision-making, and improved civic services.

New Zones Created Across Hyderabad

As part of the reorganisation, several new GHMC zones have been created to decentralise governance and speed up development works:

  • Uppal
  • Quthbullapur
  • Malkajgiri
  • Shamshabad
  • Golkonda
  • Rajendranagar

The addition of zonal and circle offices will allow residents to access civic services closer to their homes.

New Zonal Commissioners Assume Charge

During the inauguration:

  • Anurag Jayanti assumed charge as Zonal Commissioner of Rajendranagar
  • G. Mukunda Reddy took charge as Zonal Commissioner of Golkonda

Commissioner Karnan said the new leadership would play a key role in accelerating development and improving service delivery.

Focus on Faster Civic Services and Development

The GHMC Commissioner said the establishment of additional zonal and circle offices would:

  • Improve accessibility of civic services
  • Speed up infrastructure and development works
  • Enhance public grievance redressal
  • Strengthen governance across the mega city

He expressed confidence that the expanded GHMC structure would better meet the needs of Hyderabad’s growing population.
