Organised under the Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and hosted for the first time in the city by KIMS Cuddles Hospital, the conference focuses on strengthening pediatric emergency care, preventive strategies, and addressing growing mental health concerns among children.
Preventable emergencies a major concern
Speaking at the event, Dr. Bhaskara Rao Bollineni, Chairman and Managing Director of KIMS Group of Hospitals, highlighted that changing lifestyles and increasing screen exposure are contributing to new-age health and behavioral issues among children.
He noted that children are often exposed to inappropriate digital content without adequate supervision, which can adversely impact their mental well-being. Stress, cyberbullying, and even suicidal tendencies among adolescents are on the rise, he said, urging parents to remain vigilant and seek medical help if children show signs such as withdrawal, loss of appetite, or sudden behavioral changes.
Awareness can save lives
Dr. Nitin Chawla, Chief of Pediatrics at KIMS Cuddles, stated that nearly 70% of pediatric emergency cases are preventable with proper awareness and timely precautions.
He pointed out that many accidents occur due to negligence at home, such as children ingesting harmful substances like chemicals or petroleum products, or not following safety measures like wearing helmets and seat belts. He also warned about the dangers of swallowing small objects, which can cause life-threatening airway blockages, emphasizing the need for immediate medical intervention.
Changing family structures, rising risks
Experts at the conference observed that the shift from joint families to nuclear setups has reduced supervision of children, increasing the risk of accidents and emergencies. They stressed that early intervention during the first few hours of an emergency can significantly improve outcomes.

A special road safety awareness video was also launched during the event to promote child safety.
Training the next generation of doctors
The conference includes 12 specialized workshops aimed at enhancing the clinical skills of young pediatricians. These sessions cover ventilation techniques, trauma care, neonatal emergencies, and the use of point-of-care ultrasound.
A dedicated program titled “Heroes on Wheels” focused on the safe transportation of critically ill children, while experts also trained participants in early detection of choking, infections, congenital heart diseases, and allergies.
Focus on mental health and parenting
Speakers emphasized that beyond medical care, parental involvement plays a crucial role in a child’s overall well-being. Parents were advised to spend quality time with their children and remain attentive to their emotional and psychological needs.
Distinguished participation
The event was attended by prominent figures including Dr. Neelam Mohan and Dr. Zelalem Birhanu Taffesse from UNICEF, along with Dr. Ankita Chawla. Awards were also presented in recognition of contributions to pediatric healthcare.
The conference underscored a key message: with greater awareness, timely care, and responsible parenting, a significant number of child health emergencies can be prevented, ensuring safer and healthier lives for children.
