Hyderabad Metro Issues Kite-Flying Warning Ahead of Sankranti, Imposes Restrictions Near Corridors

Hyderabad Metro Rail warns of kite-flying risks during Sankranti, bans kites near stations and corridors to prevent power disruptions and ensure commuter safety.

With Sankranti celebrations approaching, Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL) has expressed serious concern over kite flying disrupting metro services and announced strict restrictions near metro stations and corridors to ensure passenger safety and uninterrupted operations.

Why HMRL Is Concerned

Metro officials said kite flying increases sharply during Sankranti, especially in Secunderabad and other busy city areas. Sharp kite strings often get entangled in overhead electric wires, leading to power interruptions and service disruptions.

HMRL noted that such incidents have occurred in the past, forcing temporary suspension of metro services. To avoid a repeat, authorities have decided to enforce preventive measures this year.

Kite Flying Banned Near Metro Areas

According to the advisory:

  • Kite flying is strictly prohibited at metro stations, along metro corridors, and in surrounding areas
  • The move is aimed at protecting passengers and preventing damage to overhead electric lines
  • Enforcement teams will monitor sensitive stretches during the festival period

Kite Festival Near Parade Grounds Raises Questions

HMRL also highlighted concerns around the annual kite festival at Parade Grounds, located close to two key metro stations. The event attracts participants from across India and abroad, many of whom fly large and heavy kites, increasing the risk to metro infrastructure.

Officials warned that high-altitude and heavy kites pose a significant threat to overhead electric equipment, potentially causing wider disruptions.

Public Debate Over Safety Measures

While restrictions for the general public have been tightened, questions are being raised over the lack of clearly announced safety measures for large-scale kite events near metro lines. The contrast between strict bans for citizens and perceived leniency for big festivals has sparked public debate on policy consistency.

Striking a Balance During Sankranti

HMRL said it is coordinating with district authorities to strike a balance between festival celebrations and urban transport safety. The focus, officials said, is to ensure:

  • Safe and smooth metro operations
  • No inconvenience to commuters
  • No dampening of Sankranti festivities

Residents have been urged to celebrate responsibly and avoid flying kites near metro infrastructure to prevent accidents and service interruptions.
