Hyderabad to Get New Six-Lane Flyover; GHMC Plan Aims to Reduce Traffic Congestion

GHMC plans a new six-lane flyover to Shamshabad Airport to reduce Hyderabad traffic congestion and improve connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

Hyderabad: The GHMC new six-lane flyover to Shamshabad Airport is being planned to reduce traffic congestion in Hyderabad and provide faster connectivity to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport. The project is expected to help thousands of daily commuters who travel between the city and Shamshabad Airport.

The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is preparing to build the six-lane flyover as part of the city’s infrastructure expansion, aimed at improving traffic flow and reducing travel time for motorists heading towards the airport.

GHMC Plans Six-Lane Flyover to Shamshabad Airport

Under the GHMC infrastructure development plan, the proposed six-lane flyover to Shamshabad Airport will be constructed alongside the upcoming Hyderabad Metro Airport extension route.

Key Highlights of the Flyover Project

  • Six-lane bidirectional flyover
  • Estimated project cost: ₹345 crore
  • Route: Mylardevpally – Katedan Junction – Shamshabad
  • Designed to improve airport connectivity and highway traffic flow

The flyover will be developed under the Hyderabad City Innovative and Transformative Infrastructure initiative, which focuses on improving major transport corridors in the city.

Faster Connectivity to Hyderabad Airport

Currently, many passengers depend on airport buses, taxis, or private vehicles to reach Rajiv Gandhi International Airport at Shamshabad. Due to heavy traffic on some routes, travel time can increase during peak hours.

The GHMC six-lane flyover to Shamshabad Airport is expected to:

  • Reduce travel time to the airport
  • Improve connectivity from Hyderabad city to Shamshabad
  • Ease congestion on National Highway routes
  • Provide smoother travel for daily commuters and airport passengers

Officials believe the flyover will become a major alternative route for vehicles heading towards the airport.

Metro Expansion Also Planned for Airport Route

The Telangana government is also planning the second phase of the Hyderabad Metro Rail expansion, which will connect the city directly to Shamshabad Airport.

The Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the airport metro corridor has already been prepared. Once implemented, the metro extension and the new six-lane flyover together will significantly improve airport connectivity.

This will offer commuters more travel options and reduce dependency on road transport.

More Flyovers Planned Across Hyderabad

Apart from the six-lane flyover to Shamshabad Airport, several other traffic improvement projects are being planned across Hyderabad.

Proposed Infrastructure Projects

  • Steel bridge from Punjagutta Nagarjuna Circle to GVK Mall
  • Underpass near the TV9 office
  • Flyover around KBR Park

Authorities are expected to invite tenders soon, after which construction work for these projects will begin.

Traffic Relief Expected in the Future

With the construction of new flyovers across Hyderabad, city planners expect a significant reduction in traffic congestion in major areas.

The GHMC six-lane flyover to Shamshabad Airport is considered a key project that will help improve urban mobility, airport connectivity, and highway traffic movement in the coming years.

As Hyderabad continues to expand rapidly, such infrastructure projects are expected to play a crucial role in ensuring smooth travel for motorists and passengers heading to Shamshabad Airport.
