In a major development, the HYDRAA Commissioner inspected Banjara Lake encroachments and also launched a probe into missing lakes in Mamidipally, Shamshabad, following multiple public complaints.

HYDRAA Commissioner A. V. Ranganath conducted a field visit to review ground realities and assess the extent of encroachments and pollution affecting key water bodies in Hyderabad.

Banjara Lake Encroachments and Pollution

The Commissioner first inspected the Banjara Lake near Banjara Hills Road No. 1, where serious concerns were raised by local residents and MLA Danam Nagender.

Key observations include:

  • The lake has been heavily encroached and polluted
  • Sewage water is directly entering the lake
  • Large amounts of plastic waste have accumulated
  • The lake has turned into one of the most polluted water bodies in Hyderabad

Officials also noted that construction activities and dumping of waste have threatened the very existence of the lake.

Road and Access Issues Near Temple

Complaints were also received regarding:

  • Blocked access road to Kattamaisamma Temple
  • Alleged control of the access route by nearby establishments
  • Inconvenience caused to devotees visiting the temple

These concerns were taken seriously during the inspection.

HYDRAA Action Plan for Banjara Lake

The Commissioner assured that:

  • A detailed report will be prepared for lake restoration
  • Government land around the lake will be protected
  • Action will be taken against illegal constructions blocking drainage channels
  • Restoration work will begin after government approval

He emphasized that the focus will be on protecting the lake without disturbing residential areas.

Missing Lakes in Mamidipally Shamshabad

The HYDRAA Commissioner also investigated missing lakes in Mamidipally, Shamshabad, where locals reported disappearance of several water bodies.

Lakes under concern include:

  • Ongoni Kunta
  • Kanakayya Kunta
  • Marrivanikunta
  • Errakunta

Key issues identified:

  • Some lakes have been completely encroached
  • Flood channels connecting these lakes are blocked or altered
  • This has caused waterlogging and flooding of nearby houses during rains

Strict Warning Against Encroachments

The Commissioner directed officials to:

  • Collect complete data from irrigation and revenue departments
  • Hold meetings with encroachers
  • Ensure removal of illegal occupations

He warned that if encroachments are not cleared voluntarily, HYDRAA will take direct action.
