If I had conversation with Modi, I would have asked about protection of Muslim minority: Obama
Former US president Barack Obama, in an interview with CNN, expressed concerns about the potential consequences of not safeguarding the rights of ethnic minorities in India, stating that the country could face division.
The Congress party responded to Obama’s remarks regarding the protection of ethnic minorities in India during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the United States.
Notably, Obama’s comments were made while Modi was on his visit to the United States, where he met with President Joe Biden at the White House.
Although Obama acknowledged collaborating with Modi on climate change and other issues, he emphasized the importance of raising concerns about Indian democracy during diplomatic discussions.
Obama stressed that if a US president were to meet with Modi, it would be worth mentioning the protection of the Muslim minority in a predominantly Hindu India. He argued that failing to protect the rights of ethnic minorities could lead to internal conflicts, which would be contrary to India’s interests. Obama also highlighted that as the president of the United States, he had multiple interests to consider and had encountered allies who did not adhere to ideal democratic practices within their governments and political parties.
The Congress party seized the opportunity to criticize Prime Minister Narendra Modi following Barack Obama’s comments about protecting the rights of ethnic minorities in India during Modi’s US visit.
