Defending champions India created history by winning the T20 World Cup for the third time after defeating New Zealand in a one-sided final. With a dominant performance in both batting and bowling, Team India secured a massive 96-run victory, lifting the trophy in front of home fans.
Batting first, India posted a huge total of 255 runs, putting New Zealand under immense pressure from the start. The Indian top order played aggressively, leaving the Kiwi bowlers struggling throughout the innings.
Sanju Samson played a brilliant knock of 89 runs, while Abhishek Sharma scored 52 runs and Ishan Kishan added 54 runs. Their explosive batting helped India reach a commanding total despite New Zealand pacer James Neesham, who briefly slowed the scoring with three wickets in a single over. In the final overs, Shivam Dube added quick runs to push India to a record total.
Chasing a daunting target of 256 runs, New Zealand struggled right from the beginning. The Indian bowlers maintained tight control and took wickets at regular intervals.
Axar Patel gave India an early breakthrough by dismissing Finn Allen, followed by the wicket of Glenn Phillips in the same spell. Shortly after, Jasprit Bumrah removed Rachin Ravindra, with Ishan Kishan taking a diving catch to send him back to the pavilion.
New Zealand lost three crucial wickets during the powerplay and never fully recovered from the early setbacks. Although Tim Seifert scored 52 runs, the rest of the batting lineup failed to build partnerships.
India’s bowlers continued to dominate as Varun Chakravarthy dismissed Seifert, while Hardik Pandya removed Mark Chapman. With New Zealand reduced to 72 for five, the match firmly tilted in India’s favor.
Later, Kiwi captain Mitchell Santner (43) and Daryl Mitchell (17) attempted to reduce the deficit, but their efforts were cut short by India’s relentless bowling attack.
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a sensational spell, finishing with 4 wickets for 15 runs, including the wickets of James Neesham and Matt Henry in consecutive deliveries, narrowly missing a hat-trick.
Eventually, New Zealand were bowled out after losing their final wicket in Abhishek Sharma’s over, handing India a comprehensive 96-run victory.
With this triumph, Team India not only won the T20 World Cup for the third time but also overcame their previous struggles against New Zealand and their final-match pressure at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
