New Delhi: In a swift and coordinated rescue effort, the Indian Army, in collaboration with the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) and local civil administration, successfully evacuated stranded tourists from North Sikkim under Operation HimSetu.

The operation was launched after a landslide washed away a key road stretch near Taramchu, cutting off access to Chatten and leaving hundreds of tourists stranded. Responding rapidly, Army engineers from the Trishakti Corps mobilised to restore connectivity and ensure safe evacuation.

A temporary footbridge was quickly constructed over the damaged section, enabling safe passage across the affected area. Despite difficult terrain and adverse weather, rescue teams maintained steady operations.

In parallel, personnel cleared heavy snow at Donkyala Pass to ensure uninterrupted movement in the high-altitude region.

Through coordinated efforts, a total of 1,170 tourists along with 70 motorcycles were safely evacuated without any casualties.

A spokesperson for the Army said the operation reflected its commitment to “service before self,” highlighting the swift mobilisation of troops and seamless coordination with BRO and civil authorities.

The success of Operation HimSetu underscores the Army’s capability in disaster response and its crucial role in humanitarian assistance, particularly in remote and high-risk areas like North Sikkim.
