Tenure and Appointment
Justice Gavai will serve as CJI for a little over six months, with his tenure set to conclude on November 23, 2025.
The Centre approved his appointment on April 29, 2025, following a recommendation by outgoing CJI Justice Sanjiv Khanna. A notification from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice stated:

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 14th May, 2025.”
A Distinguished Judicial Journey
Justice Gavai began his Supreme Court tenure on May 24, 2019, and has served on approximately 700 benches, delivering judgments across a wide array of legal domains:
- Constitutional and Administrative Law
- Civil and Criminal Law
- Commercial Disputes & Arbitration
- Electricity, Education, and Environmental Law
He has authored nearly 300 judgments, including landmark rulings from Constitution Benches that reinforced the rule of law and protected the fundamental rights of citizens.
Early Career and Background
Justice Gavai was appointed as Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court in November 2003, and became a Permanent Judge in November 2005.
Prior to his elevation to the Bench:
- He practiced constitutional and administrative law.
- Served as Standing Counsel for various civic bodies, including the Municipal Corporations of Nagpur and Amravati, and Amravati University.
- Held posts as Assistant Government Pleader and Additional Public Prosecutor at the Bombay High Court (Nagpur Bench) from 1992 to 1993.
- Later appointed as Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor in January 2000.
With his swearing-in, Justice Gavai brings to the office a deep commitment to justice, legal reform, and public service.
