KCR Schedules Key Meeting with BRS MLAs at Telangana Bhavan on December 19

Hyderabad: BRS supremo and former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) will visit Telangana Bhavan on December 19, where he will preside over a joint meeting of BRS MLAs and the party’s State Executive Committee at 2 p.m.

The meeting will primarily focus on irrigation-related issues, including the alleged neglect by the present Congress government in taking forward major irrigation projects initiated during the 10-year BRS rule. Discussions will also centre on the Krishna and Godavari river water sharing disputes and what the party terms as injustice being done to Telangana’s water rights.

The BRS leadership is particularly critical of the Congress government’s failure to prevent Andhra Pradesh from allegedly diverting Krishna and Godavari waters. Party sources said KCR believes that in such circumstances, launching a fresh public movement has become inevitable to safeguard the irrigation rights of Telangana’s farmers.

Strong objections are expected to be raised over the Centre approving only 45 TMC of Krishna water allocation for the Palamuru–Rangareddy Lift Irrigation Scheme, as against 91 TMCs sanctioned during the BRS regime. The party has accused the Congress government and Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy of compromising Telangana farmers’ interests by agreeing to the reduced allocation before the Centre.

BRS leaders have also criticised the BJP, stating that despite having eight MPs from Telangana, the party has failed to raise its voice in Parliament on the state’s irrigation concerns. The BRS alleges that both the Congress-led state government and the BJP-led Centre are jointly responsible for harming Telangana’s interests, particularly by facilitating Andhra Pradesh’s water diversion under the guise of river interlinking projects.

The party maintains that had the BRS government returned to power, water would have already been supplied through the Palamuru Lift Irrigation Project, benefiting farmers in Palamuru, Rangareddy and Nalgonda districts. Instead, it accuses the present government of complete inaction over the past two years, resulting in severe losses to farmers.

The BRS has termed the acceptance of a mere 45 TMC allocation for the Palamuru–Rangareddy project as a “grave injustice” and asserted that it will never compromise on the irrigation rights of Telangana’s farming community.

Apart from irrigation issues, the joint meeting will also deliberate on organisational matters and future strategies. Key decisions are expected on the structure, roadmap and launch of upcoming public movements to fight for Telangana’s water rights.

The meeting is likely to mark the beginning of a broader agitation against what the BRS describes as injustice in Krishna and Godavari water allocations, alleged Andhra Pradesh water diversion, and the neglect of Telangana’s irrigation projects.
