Kozhikode Suicide Case Raises Alarms Over Viral Instagram Accusations and Public Shaming

A Kozhikode suicide case linked to a viral Instagram accusation has sparked debate on public shaming, social media responsibility, and legal safeguards.

A deeply disturbing incident has emerged from Kozhikode, where a 42-year-old garment firm employee, Deepak U, died by suicide on January 18, 2026. Deepak, a resident of Govindapuram, allegedly took the extreme step after an Instagram video accusing him of harassment on a public bus went viral, garnering over two million views within a short span.

The case has triggered widespread concern over the impact of social media accusations and online public shaming.

How the Viral Video Sparked Controversy

According to details available, on January 16, a woman named Shimjitha, a resident of Areekode, recorded a video while travelling on a crowded bus from Payyannur to Kozhikode. In the clip, she alleged that Deepak had intentionally touched her, further claiming that another woman on the bus had also felt uncomfortable due to his behaviour.

Once uploaded on Instagram, the video spread rapidly. By January 17, Deepak became the target of severe online criticism, abuse, and public shaming, even though no formal police complaint had been registered at that stage.

Family Denies Allegations, Calls Contact Accidental

Deepak’s family has firmly denied the accusations. They stated that he repeatedly told them he had not committed any inappropriate act and that any physical contact occurred accidentally due to the heavy rush and sudden jerks of the bus.

Family members also pointed out that viral clips show his elbow brushing against Shimjitha during the bus’s movement, which they say was unintentional. Although Shimjitha described the incident as a “sexual boundary violation,” she reportedly deleted her social media posts later following intense public backlash.

After Deepak’s death, his relatives demanded that the case be treated as abetment to suicide. They have also decided to approach the Human Rights Commission seeking intervention.

Noted men’s rights activist Rahul Easwar has publicly announced legal support for the family and urged authorities to ensure a fair and impartial investigation.

Police Investigation Underway

The Kozhikode Medical College Police has registered a case of unnatural death. As part of the investigation, police are:

  • Recording statements from Shimjitha
  • Questioning bus staff and passengers
  • Examining the intent behind recording and sharing the video
  • Verifying why no formal complaint was filed
  • Analysing whether the viral video involved editing or manipulation

As of January 19, no arrests have been made.

A Larger Debate on Social Media Accountability

The Kozhikode suicide case has once again brought attention to the serious consequences of online accusations without due legal process. Experts and citizens alike are questioning whether:

  • Social media platforms need stricter accountability mechanisms
  • There should be clear legal consequences for online public shaming
  • Allegations should be handled through law enforcement first, not viral posts

The incident highlights how digital trials on social media can have irreversible real-world consequences.

As investigations continue, the case stands as a grim reminder of the power—and danger—of viral content. The Kozhikode suicide case underscores the need for responsible use of social media, balanced laws, and greater awareness about the impact of online actions on human lives.
