New Delhi: Mullah Hibatullah Akhundzada, the Taliban’s religious head, made a statement hours after the new Afghanistan cabinet was announced, claiming the new government would begin working immediately.

“As a caretaker and committed cabinet has been announced by the authorities of the Islamic Emirate to control and run the affairs of the country, which will begin functioning as soon as possible, I assure all countrymen that the figures will work hard to uphold Islamic rules and Sharia law in the country, protect the country’s highest interests, secure Afghanistan’s borders, and enshrine in law the country’s highest values,” he said.

The new government is thus committed to protecting human rights, according to the statement.

“Within the context of the sacred religion of Islam, the Islamic Emirate will take significant and effective actions to preserve human rights, minorities’ rights, and the rights of underprivileged groups,” the statement adds. (IANS)
