NIMS Expansion Gathers Pace: 2,000-Bed Super-Speciality Facility Likely by Year-End
NIMS Hyderabad expansion is progressing rapidly, with a 2,000-bed super-speciality facility set to boost total capacity to nearly 3,800 beds by year-end.

The expansion of Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) is gaining momentum and is expected to be completed by the end of this year, marking a major upgrade to Telangana’s healthcare infrastructure. The project will add 2,000 new beds, increasing the hospital’s capacity from 1,639 to nearly 3,800 beds, significantly strengthening public healthcare services.

NIMS Director Dr. N. Bheerappa said the expansion will transform NIMS into a comprehensive super-speciality medical hub with advanced treatment, diagnostics, and emergency care facilities.
₹1,698-Crore Project to Strengthen Healthcare Infrastructure
The expansion project has been sanctioned by the Telangana government as part of a broader initiative to make the state’s healthcare system a role model for the country. Built at an estimated cost of ₹1,698 crore, the project spans 19.54 acres and covers more than 26 lakh square feet.
Once completed, the expanded campus will significantly improve access to advanced medical care for patients from Telangana and neighbouring states.
Four Integrated Blocks in the Expanded Campus
The new NIMS campus will comprise four integrated blocks, designed to function as a single super-speciality healthcare complex:
- Block A: Outpatient (OPD) services
- Blocks B and C: Inpatient departments
- Block D: Dedicated emergency and trauma care
All four blocks will rise to 13 floors, enabling high-capacity patient care and specialised medical services under one roof.
Construction Progress and Emergency Block Status
According to Dr. Bheerappa, civil construction is progressing steadily on the main hospital complex. Eight floors have already been completed, while work continues on the remaining five floors.
He explained that the emergency block construction started later because a government school previously located on that portion of the campus had to be relocated. Due to this, only two floors of the emergency block have been completed so far.
42 Departments Offering Super-Speciality Care
The expansion will bring 42 departments under one roof, offering advanced super-speciality treatment across multiple disciplines, including:
- Heart and cardiology services
- Kidney and nephrology care
- Brain and neurology services
- Liver treatment
- Cancer care
- Emergency and trauma services
- Orthopaedic specialities
This wide range of departments is expected to reduce the burden on private hospitals and improve access to affordable specialised treatment.
38 Advanced Operation Theatres with HEPA Filtration
The upgraded facility will include 38 state-of-the-art operation theatres, along with hybrid catheterisation laboratories. These modular OTs will be:
- Fully air-conditioned
- Equipped with High-Efficiency Particulate Air (HEPA) filtration systems
- Designed to maintain a near zero-bacteria environment
This infrastructure will support complex and highly specialised surgical procedures.
Strong Focus on Paediatric Subspecialities
NIMS also plans to introduce around eight new subspecialities, with a special emphasis on paediatric care, an area currently limited in public hospitals. These include:
- Paediatric nephrology
- Paediatric rheumatology
- Paediatric immunodeficiency
- Paediatric cardiology
- Paediatric oncology
Officials said the addition of these services will significantly strengthen specialised healthcare for children.
Advanced Diagnostics and Research Facilities
The expansion will also enhance diagnostic and research capabilities with:
- Three CT scan machines
- Two MRI machines
- Hybrid cath labs
- CT-MRI facilities
- An advanced digital laboratory
The total value of new medical equipment alone is estimated at ₹100 crore.
Big Boost to Telangana’s Public Healthcare System
With nearly 3,800 beds, 42 departments, advanced operation theatres, and modern diagnostics, the NIMS expansion project is set to become a cornerstone of Telangana’s public healthcare system. Once completed, it is expected to greatly improve patient care, reduce waiting times, and establish NIMS as one of the country’s leading government-run super-speciality hospitals.
