Ola, Uber and Rapido Drivers’ Strike Hits Hyderabad, Commuters Face Trouble

Ola, Uber and Rapido drivers go on strike across India, severely affecting Hyderabad commuters. Drivers demand minimum fares and welfare benefits.

Hyderabad: App-based transport services were severely affected on Friday as Ola, Uber and Rapido drivers went on a nationwide strike, causing major inconvenience to commuters. The impact was clearly felt in Hyderabad, where cabs, autos and bike taxis largely stayed off the roads from early morning.

The strike was organised under the banner of the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union as part of an All India Breakdown protest.

Why Are Ola, Uber and Rapido Drivers on Strike?

Drivers said they are protesting against:

  • Alleged exploitation by aggregator companies
  • Unfair pricing and commission policies
  • Lack of basic welfare and social security

They demanded that the government immediately implement the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines 2025 and officially fix a minimum base fare.

Key Demands of the Drivers

The striking drivers have put forward the following demands:

  • Government-approved minimum fare per ride
  • Reduction in company commission, which drivers claim is 25 to 30 percent per trip
  • Strict ban on using private vehicles for commercial purposes
  • Welfare measures for gig workers, including:
    • Health insurance
    • Accident insurance
    • Pension benefits

Drivers say high commissions have made it difficult for them to earn a sustainable income despite long working hours.

Hyderabad Commuters Struggle for Transport

Due to the strike:

  • Many passengers were left stranded
  • Office-goers and daily commuters faced delays
  • Availability of cabs, autos and bike taxis was extremely limited

People who depend heavily on app-based transport services were the worst affected.

Airport Operations Unaffected

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport management clarified that:

  • Airport operations are running normally
  • Flights are not affected by the strike

However, passengers were advised to plan their travel in advance, leave early from home, and make alternative transport arrangements due to the shortage of cabs.

Situation Being Closely Watched

The Ola, Uber and Rapido drivers’ strike in Hyderabad has once again highlighted the growing concerns of gig workers across India. Authorities are expected to review the demands as commuters continue to face difficulties.

The situation remains tense as drivers insist they will continue their protest until concrete steps are taken.
