PM Modi’s Visit to Thailand
In his departure statement on Thursday, PM Modi expressed enthusiasm for his upcoming engagements in Thailand. He stated, “At the invitation of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, I am departing today for Thailand on an official visit and to attend the 6th BIMSTEC Summit.”

PM Modi highlighted the growing importance of BIMSTEC in regional development and economic progress, emphasizing its role in promoting connectivity in the Bay of Bengal region. “Over the past decade, BIMSTEC has emerged as a significant forum for promoting regional development, connectivity, and economic progress,” he noted.
India’s North Eastern region, according to PM Modi, lies at the very heart of BIMSTEC, which is poised to further India’s collaboration with Southeast Asia.
Key Engagements During the Visit
During his visit, PM Modi is expected to engage in bilateral talks with Prime Minister Shinawatra and other Thai leaders. The discussions will focus on elevating the historical, cultural, and philosophical ties between India and Thailand. “Our age-old historical ties, which are based on shared culture, philosophy, and spiritual thought, will be at the core of my discussions with Thai leadership,” PM Modi said.

Apart from diplomatic engagements, the Prime Minister will also interact with the Indian diaspora in Thailand, strengthening the bond between the two countries’ people.
The BIMSTEC Summit
The 6th BIMSTEC Summit will provide a platform for PM Modi to engage with leaders from seven member states, including Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, and Thailand. The summit is set to focus on regional integration, economic cooperation, and mutual development in the Bay of Bengal region.
India plays a vital role within BIMSTEC, acting as the primary driver of regional collaboration. PM Modi’s presence is expected to enhance India’s leadership role within the organization, further reinforcing its commitment to regional progress.
Upcoming Visit to Sri Lanka
Following his visit to Thailand, PM Modi will travel to Sri Lanka from April 4-6, 2025, to review the progress made since President Ranil Wickremesinghe’s successful visit to India in December 2024. The two nations are set to discuss shared objectives under the vision of “Fostering Partnerships for a Shared Future.”
PM Modi is optimistic about the outcomes of both visits, stating, “I am confident that these visits will build on the foundations of the past and contribute to strengthening our close relationships for the benefit of our people and the wider region.”
