Restaurant Closures Leave Gig Workers Struggling in Hyderabad

Delivery workers say that the continuous rise in petrol prices has significantly increased their daily expenses, with a large portion of their earnings now going toward fuel. At the same time, they claim that the companies have not increased the per-order delivery charges, leaving them with little or no profit.

Hyderabad: The closure of several restaurants in Hyderabad has created serious difficulties for delivery boys and gig workers, leaving thousands worried about their future.

A large number of young workers associated with online delivery platforms such as Swiggy, Zomato and Zepto are facing growing financial challenges as their income continues to decline.

Delivery workers say that the continuous rise in petrol prices has significantly increased their daily expenses, with a large portion of their earnings now going toward fuel. At the same time, they claim that the companies have not increased the per-order delivery charges, leaving them with little or no profit.

In addition, rising rents and high electricity bills have forced many small and mid-sized restaurants in the city to shut down. As a result, delivery workers now have to travel longer distances to pick up orders, leading to a waste of both time and fuel.

With fewer restaurants operating, major food hubs in the city have become overcrowded. Workers often have to wait for hours just to receive a single order, and they say they are not paid any additional compensation for this waiting time.

The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union has urged the government and delivery companies to increase delivery charges in proportion to rising fuel prices. The union has also demanded the introduction of a minimum daily wage, as well as health insurance and accident coverage for gig workers.

Economic experts warn that if these issues are not addressed soon, Hyderabad’s delivery ecosystem could be severely affected, as the job is becoming financially unsustainable for many workers under the current conditions.
