Hyderabad: In a major breakthrough against cybercrime in Hyderabad, the S.R. Nagar Police arrested a habitual cyber fraud offender who impersonated a Cyber Crime Police Officer to extort money from innocent victims. The accused is reportedly involved in 44 cyber fraud petitions across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, police said.

Cyber Crime Case Registered at S.R. Nagar Police Station
The arrest was made on January 28, 2026, by the team of S.R. Nagar Police Station under the supervision of senior officers of the Jubilee Hills Zone.
A case was registered under:
- Crime No. 868/2025
- Sections 318(4), 319(2) of BNS
- Sections 66(C) and 66(D) of the Information Technology Act
How the Cyber Fraud Was Carried Out
Police revealed that the accused used a well-planned cyber extortion method, which included:
- Creating fake female profiles on social media platforms, mainly ShareChat
- Gaining victims’ trust through online chats
- Collecting their phone numbers
- Calling them while posing as a Cyber Crime Police Officer
- Threatening them with false cases of obscene online activity
- Extorting money in the name of “fine amounts” through UPI and digital payments
- Asking victims to factory reset their phones to erase evidence
Student Duped of ₹97,540
In the present case, a student was cheated of ₹97,540 through multiple digital transactions after being threatened over the phone. After realising the fraud, the victim lodged a complaint through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal, which led to a detailed investigation and eventual arrest.

The arrested accused has been identified as:
- Name: Jala Sai Ram Reddy
- Age: 27 years
- Occupation: Rapido Rider
- Residence: Karimnagar
- Native Place: Parkal, Puligilla, Warangal
During interrogation, the accused confessed to his involvement in multiple cyber fraud cases.
Involved in 44 Cyber Fraud Petitions
Technical analysis confirmed that the accused is linked to 44 cyber fraud petitions, including registered cases and complaints filed on the cyber crime portal in Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu.
Police found that the accused and his associates:
- Used multiple SIM cards and mobile phones
- Operated several bank accounts and UPI scanners
- Misused local shopkeepers’ bank accounts by giving false reasons to route cheated money
Police Issue Public Advisory
Police have strongly advised the public to remain alert and remember:
- Police never demand money or fines over phone calls
- No fines are collected through UPI or digital payments
- There is no concept of “Digital Arrest” in law
Citizens receiving such calls are urged to immediately contact the nearest police station or report through the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
